The choice is not really environmental versus cheap — it is about steam and grease. Bagasse (pressed sugarcane fibre) breathes slightly, so fried food arrives less soggy than it does in a sealed plastic clamshell. That single property is why fish and chips, samosas, pakoras and fried chicken travel better in bagasse even before you consider compostability.
Plastic hinged containers win where you need a tight seal and reheating. Saucy dishes, curries, anything with liquid that will slide around in a delivery bag, and anything the customer will microwave at home — plastic hinged microwavable is the safer call. It is also the cheaper option per unit across most sizes.
Compartments are worth thinking about separately from material. A 3-compartment box lets you plate a full meal — rice, curry, salad — without a second container and a second lid, which usually costs less overall than two 1-compartment boxes even though the unit price looks higher.

What each size is actually for
9x6 is the single-entrée workhorse — one main plus a small side. It is the size most Lebanese and Chinese takeout menus default to.
9x9, 3-compartment is the full-meal box: rice or naan in one well, curry in another, salad or pickle in the third. It replaces a box plus two portion cups.
8x8 and 6x6 are for smaller mains, appetiser portions and lunch specials. The 6x6 microwavable case (400 pieces) is the one to buy if you run a high-volume lunch counter.
24 oz and 28 oz rectangular containers with lids sit between deli containers and meal boxes — best for rice bowls, pasta and anything you would otherwise pack in a round tub that rolls in the bag.

Is bagasse actually compostable in New Brunswick?
Bagasse is certified compostable in commercial composting facilities. Access to industrial composting varies by municipality in NB, so check with your local waste authority on whether it goes in the organics stream in your area.
Can bagasse containers go in the microwave?
Yes — bagasse handles microwave reheating well and does not warp the way thin plastic can. It is also oven-safe to moderate temperatures, which plastic is not.
Which is cheaper, bagasse or plastic?

Do hinged containers leak?
