Barrel bags, handled bags, or folding boxes — which one your order needs

Barrel bags (the flat-bottom brown bags, 1/6 and 1/8 size) are the default for counter service and pickup orders. The 1/6 is the larger of the two and takes a full family order; the 1/8 handles a single-person order or a couple of containers. They are the cheapest way to move an order out the door, but they have no handles, so they are awkward for a delivery driver carrying three at once.

Kraft bags with twist handles (10x5x13) cost more per bag and are the right call for delivery and for anything a customer carries more than a few steps. If you are on Uber Eats, DoorDash or SkipTheDishes, handled bags noticeably reduce spill complaints because the bag stays upright.

Kraft folding takeout boxes (#4 and #8) are the Chinese-takeout-style pails. They are a container rather than a carrier — good for rice, noodles and dry sides, and they stack neatly inside a barrel bag.

How to size a bag against your actual order

A useful test: pack your single most common order and your largest common order, then size to those two. Most NB kitchens end up carrying exactly two bag sizes — a small one for single orders and a handled one for family and delivery orders — rather than three or four.

Sandwich bags are a separate line item and worth stocking regardless. Bought by the case, they are among the cheapest packaging on the list and they stop you burning a barrel bag on a single wrap or pastry.
